80′s TV Theme Song Shootout

I’ve been feeling a bit nostalgic for the 80′s lately, and I have no idea why. I wasn’t very old during most of the 80′s, but what I do remember well are the amazing TV theme songs! The dramas had especially well-written compositions. Here were my top four, in no particular order:

Alright, right away, we need to cut out the first two. Interesting, but a little thin and not quite as moving as the others. Then there’s Doogie Howser and Alf. If you haven’t heard the Alf theme in a while, click on the link right now. Really, do it. I dare you to find a more perfect combination of slap bass, electric keyboards, and string synths.

Didn’t that just make you feel happy?

However, the Doogie Howser theme has a secret card up its sleeve: Neil Patrick Harris playing it on SNL with an orchestra. That’s right, he did it: A single tear. And the Howser wins!

But don’t step there. Let the 80′s nostalgia continue on with this amazing medley. Note the warning: “Severe Saxophone Overload.” Alright, who’s cutting up onions in here?

Song of the Week – Take 2

In a different year on a different blog, I started something I called ‘Song of the Week’. The plan was to take one song, record a quick version on the piano and post the recording. I also took suggestions on what songs I would play. Then I got insanely busy for about a year.

In its new reincarnated form, the Song of the Week will not be weekly, more like bi-weekly. But I can’t call it ‘Song of Bi-Weekly’ and ‘Song of the Somewhat Random Time Period’ doesn’t sound all that hot either.

Oh yeah, one other thing. I used to take requests. That landed me with the daunting proposition of somehow making Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and the Hokey Pokey sound cool:

Well, I tried my best! So from now on, I pick the songs. Easy ones, like Happy Birthday:

So stay tuned for next week. Or the Next Somewhat Random Time Period.
